What Your Mum Should Have Taught You About Whites

Somewhere there's a mum with kids in white clothes for years and no graveyard of stains to show for it. It's not luck, and it's not a better detergent. It's a handful of habits — some of them properly old-school — that actually do something.

1. Cold water, every time, for a fresh stain

Hot water is the enemy of a fresh stain. Milk, egg, blood, grass, sweat — these are all protein-based, and heat cooks the protein right into the fibres before you get a chance to lift it out. Cold water first. Always.

2. Treat it wet, not “when you get home”

A stain has a shelf life. In the first minute it's still sitting on top of the fabric. Give it an hour and it's had time to bond to the fibres, which is a completely different — and much harder — job. Speed beats every fancy stain-removal method going.

3. Dab and lift. Never rub.

Rubbing a fresh stain feels productive and does the opposite — it spreads the stain sideways and pushes it deeper into the weave. Blot from the outside in.

4. Sunlight is a free, old-fashioned bleach

Hanging whites outside in direct sun isn't just for drying — UV light genuinely helps break down and fade residual staining, no chemicals required. It's why your grandmother's sheets always looked whiter than anyone's tumble-dried ones.

5. Oxygen bleach for soaking, not chlorine

Chlorine bleach works, but it also breaks down cotton fibres over time and can leave whites with a dull, yellowish cast after enough washes. Oxygen-based bleach (sodium percarbonate — the powder in most “colour-safe” or “activated oxy” products) lifts stains without the long-term damage.

6. Never overload the machine

Whites need room to move. Cram the drum and detergent can't rinse out evenly, which is one of the most common — and least obvious — reasons whites go grey over months, not from one bad stain but from residue building up wash after wash.

The one habit mum had that you don't

Mum had time to hover over a stain at the kitchen sink. You've got a toddler in one arm and a shopping trolley in the other. That's the real difference — not that you know less, it's that you're rarely standing next to cold water and a bar of soap when the mess actually happens.

That's what an Uh-oh! stain remover wipe is for. Keep one in every bag — not just the changing bag — so “treat it in the first minute” is actually possible at the park, at daycare pickup, or at your sister's engagement party, not just at home.

Six good habits and one wipe within reach. That's the whole trick.
